Lack of Sanitary Toilet Facility

Lack of Sanitary Facility is a sanitation problem in the community wherein sanitary conditions poses a risk for the health of the family and the community as a whole. This leads to multiple diseases including high number of cases of UTI and diarrhea. Establishing sanitary toilet among the families through healthy facility and healthy mind (by health education), the goal is to overall achieve a healthy community.

Goal:

To increase the number of households with sanitary toilet facility from 53% to 100% in Barangay Bag-ong Dalaguete Municipality of Mahayag, Zamboanga Del Sur by the year 2020

Cues:
  • Water Sealed Latrines:  48.5% (47 of 97 households)

  • Antipolo Type Latrines:  4.1% (4 of 97 households)

  • Bored Hole System:         36.1% (35 of 97 households)

  • No Sanitary Toilet:            11.3% (11 of 97 households) 

Specific Objectives:

  1. Increase the number of installed water-sealed toilet bowls in Bag-ong Dalaguete.​

  2. Increase the knowledge of the residents of Barangay Bag-ong Dalaguete on the importance of having a sanitary toilet facility.

  3. Improve knowledge and practices through promotion of good hygiene among elementary students of barangay Bag-ong Dalaguete

  4. Establish a monitoring scheme to ensure maintenance of sanitary toilet facilities in Barangay Bag-ong Dalaguete

Accomplishments and Updates

"Preparation for Toilet Construction: Digging for Septic Tanks"

The septic tank hole served as a community participation, whenever the household complied to the specifics of economical sanitary toilet facility, the family would receive the donated materials for a sanitary toilet facilities. Families who experience challenges were continually encouraged through health teachings. 

"Coordination with 4Ps"

Coordinate with 4Ps members of the community encouraging to utilized given budgetin creation of Sanitary toilet.

One part of 4Ps is being able to construct a sanitary toilet facility with this, financial aid is given to build the facility. The meeting encourages the 4Ps family members to use the allocation to build their own toilet. 

"Construction of Sanitary Toilet Facility"

Toilet construction was done in each household. The family is encouraged to build their toilet based on the specifics given my the rural health center of Mahayag. 

"Signing of Social Contract"

Social contract is a responsibility of the family who were recipients of the sanitary toilet facility materials to finish the construction at a due date given by the family themselves, this was countersigned by the sanitary inspector.

Specific Objective 2: Increase the knowledge of the residents of Barangay Bag-ong Dalaguete on the importance of having a sanitary toilet facility.

Coordinate with the sanitary inspector to aid in providing a short lecture on the types and importance of having a sanitary toilet facility, and how it can help the residents of the barangay in terms of their health

Specific Objective 3: Improve knowledge and practices through promotion of good hygiene among elementary students

"Interactive learning for students"

Interactive learning was implemented to the students of Bag-ong Dalaguete maximizing through participation. 

Series of lectures were given from 2018-2020. Hugas kamay action song (Hand washing action song) was introduced to the students to increase awareness on importance of handwashing as well as improving practices among the students. Return demonstration with each student was also done to assess whether the student is performing a proper hand washing. Checklist was used for the assessment. 38/42 students performed well

"Inter-sectoral collaboration"

Coordinate with the sanitary inspector as well as the purok leaders to regularly check the household’s sanitary toilets facilities. This will be done twice yearly for continuous monitoring of families with sanitary toilet facilities. Ensuring sustainability of the program. The purpose of inter-sectoral collaboration is to establish the connection from the RHU with the barangay officials and with the household. 

Sample report given by the barangay officials, verbalized. This was then signed by the barangay captain. This shows that the barangay officials continuosly checks the sanitary conditions of the households. Determining whether the toilet is functional, has walls and roof, as well as water and soap.

Creation of memorandum of understanding between the students and the government officials. Under the agreement was the no toilet no barangay clearance which was suggested by the barangay captain to ensure a 100% toilet facility barangay. The agreement urges the families to build their sanitary toilet

"Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Sanitary Toilet Facility"

The team conducted a Focus Group Discussion on the economical sanitary toilet facility among families of Bag-ong Dalaguete includes the specifics such as heigh of septic tank hole as recommended by the rural health center of Mahayag. The FGD allows participation of the families, empowering them to put importance on sanitary toilets. Suggestions and comments were acknowledged during the discussion. 

"Coordination with RHU & LGU for acquistion of materials"

The team coordinated with the Sanitary Inspectors of Mahayag Rural Health Unit and Local Government for the acquisition of 35 toilet bowls, sacks of cements and gravel for the construction of the  Sanitary toilet facilities in the community. 

The team also presented the conditions of toilet facilities in the community to the Mayor of Mahayag Municipality - Hon. Manuel Saladaga.  The request for additional toilet bowls were approved. This is to address the sanitary toilet conditions of the 12 remaining numbers with unsanitary toilet in 2019. On 2020, additional 6 sanitary toilets were added, estimating to 94% sanitary toilet in the barangay.

Through annual house to house survey the sanitary condition of toilet facilities of each household were examined. Practices such as washing hands were also assessed

"Collaboration with Barangay council for the creation of Memorandum of understanding"

The memorandum of understanding indicated that there should be an annual report of sanitary conditions of all household under barangay Bag-ong Dalaguete. This would allow the locla government unit to be involve in the community health problem. Upon identifying the unsanitary toilet facilities, the barangay officials then encourages the household to build a sanitary toilet facility as well as reporting the data to the community nurse
