Health is a fundamental human right. This means that all individuals are entitled to have access to the different health care services offered, adequate housing, nutritious food, clean environment, safe working conditions, and many more factors to achieve the highest standard of health attainable. According to the World Health Organization, health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In order for this to be achieved, the Millennium Development Goals which included 8 target goals to be achieved by the year 2015 were created and implemented. Unfortunately, not all of the goals were met by the target year and thus, by September 2015 the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development which includes 17 goals with 169 associated targets was formally approved and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.

The sustainable development goal 6 is to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. One of the target of this goal is by the year 2030 to achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation.
